All of the above problems are more common than you would think, and can cause individuals a great deal of trouble in their lives. It can certainly be the case that they occur in combination with one another, or they can also appear in isolation.
They can appear suddenly out of the blue. Sometimes problems like this have been around for years, sometimes appearing as slightly worse or slightly better. Either way they are simply not fair, you don't deserve them in your life, and Specialist Therapies can help.

SO HOW CAN JUST TALKING HELP?

CBT is a Psychological Therapy, as is Counselling. EMDR is a little different and more linked to moving on from troublesome memories using eye movement or stimulating the body. All of these approaches are researched and designed to help people either move on from where they are or to help people to have the skills and confidence to manage their own symptoms. Sometimes people think that this just involves talking. This is part of it yes, but the main idea is to have a shared understanding about how your problem affects you now, how it formed, and what keeps it going. A therapy like CBT allows you to understand the problem and allows you to make new choices in how you think and how you behave. Focus is made on how your life is restricted by the problem. We look together at the kinds of things you would like to do (goals) and we work to change thought patterns and behaviours that prevent you from fulfilling your life. CBT and EMDR are highly researched all over the world, so there is a huge amount of evidence that they are effective treatments.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a trauma therapy that has proven very successful in treating all kinds of Psychological problems. In recent years there has been an increasing amount of research and development that has further enhanced this approach. In all the years of working as a therapist, EMDR has presented as an extremely powerful tool both as a stand-alone treatment and unblocking issues that have not been addressed before. If we consider trauma events as big 'T" and little 't' -the 'T' being acts of violence, aggression or accidents and 't' being repeated negative events such as continued put-downs, dismissal or bullying. New research suggests that 't' traumas are just as, or more toxic and harmful as "T" trauma that is a one-off event. Often people can have had both. Work is undertaken either face-to-face or virtually using body taps, hand-held buzzers or eye movement facilitated by software or by hand. This bilateral movement stimulates processing and reprocessing in the brain of past memories that are stuck, and toxic, and have an influence on how we see and feel ourselves and the world around us.

Attachment Informed EMDR (AI-EMDR)

This is an advanced form of EMDR, sometimes referred to as 'Attachment Focussed'. This approach requires additional training as well as many years of practice and supervision to perform. This form of EMDR therapy is very useful to those who have experienced childhood trauma related to attachment. This can often be a major contributing factor to individuals who have problems regulating emotions, perhaps with spells of anger and rages, addictive or sexualised behaviours, as well as bouts of severe depression or all different forms of anxiety. This is a modified approach to therapy that uses advanced techniques to access childhood memories. It also can incorporate psychodynamic tools, as well as inter-generational healing.

UNDERSTANDING WHAT IS HAPPENING
& WHY

Embrace Life’s Challenges

At Specialist therapies we work with you to understand your problem as part of a partnership. You need the right kind of support to get through the problems you are facing. Anxiety and Depressive disorders can make people feel so isolated. We understand what it's like, we are here to help you get better and to stay well.

HOW LONG ARE THE SESSIONS
&
HOW MANY SESSIONS?

Get the Most out of Life

CBT sessions last 60 minutes. EMDR sessions can sometimes last a little longer. How many sessions you require can depend on how complex your problem is and sometimes how long it has been around (but not always).  Most people only require a few sessions to notice improvement. We will always agree on the amount of sessions we should try. We never leave this open ended like some other therapists or therapy services do. Simply because we don't think this is right. We believe in you taking control of your problem and we want to help you do that quickly.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Recovery is  Important

The usual cost per session is £80. If longer-term work is required then it will cost less per session. Usually most people require just a few sessions. We understand that cost is important. That is why we ensure the quality of therapy is of the highest possible standard. You will be at the centre of therapy. It's your recovery, it's important. You are important. In comparative terms, your mental health recovery could cost as little as a long weekend break.
You will have to pay in advance for sessions. 48 hours notice is required to cancel appointments

CBT QUALITY

Make Sure You Get the Right Therapy or Therapist.

There are plenty of therapists, counsellors or Psychologists out there who will tell you they can do CBT. All may not be as it seems. The British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists have been around for many years. To be an accredited CBT Therapist registered with this recognised organisation, you have to be highly qualified and have been through a rigorous and intensive training programme, and have gained a considerable amount of experience with many disorders. It does matter, so even if you have experience of therapy somewhere else, your therapist may have had great qualities, but for CBT, unless they have been accredited with the BABCP you cannot be assured of the highest standards.

THE SPECIALIST THERAPIES STORY

Specialist Therapies (Aberdeen) was started by Psychological Therapist Kenny McLeod to promote recovery methods to individuals who were trapped in unsettling mental health situations of all kinds.

His introduction to recovery therapies came over 15 years ago within the NHS  helping people recover from life-threatening addictions. Following this,  years were spent developing skills working with Children and Young People, as well as extensive work for years with Adults with high intensity CBT approaches for depression, anxiety disorders and complex trauma.

The experience gained has been tried and tested.

Qualifications include a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (High Intensity) from Teesside University as well as Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy from the University of Dundee. As well as training in Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR Europe).

Specialist Therapies believe you know more about your problems than anybody else. Specialist Therapies also believe that you should be empowered to have a shared understanding of your problem, and you should be allowed to have the confidence to make the changes that can make a difference to your life. We believe trust and understanding is the key to this, and we know that this sadly isn't the case with some other therapy approaches both state and private.

You know more about living with your problem than anybody else, we say let's begin with that.

If you have any questions about Specialist Therapies' methods, or would like to schedule an appointment, please get in touch today. We do not share your details or the nature of your enquiry with anyone.
